Plan of Work: Embracing Life As We Age
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
A healthy brain is crucial to survival, growth and everyday successes (Smith, 2010). Similar to the rest of the body, the brain needs exercise and maintenance in order to optimize and protect its current and future health. In particular, the brain needs socialization, mental stimulation, physical activity, nutrition and sleep (AARP/Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, 2009; Alzheimer’s Association, 2011).
Perry County presented Keys to Embracing Aging: Brain Activity. 6 participants completed post lesson evaluations. As a result of the program, 6 participants reported improved understanding regarding the impact that meaningful social activity has on overall health and well-being. Each reported intentions to implement at least one strategy to improve their brain activity. All participants reported that they learned ways in which social activity, physical activity, mental stimulation, healthy diet, and sleep promote positive brain health. 6 participants reported that they typically engage in activities that strengthen their brain.
To demonstrate behavior change regarding brain activity, the program included a 30-day follow-up evaluation. All 6 returned the follow-up evaluations and reported that they are eating a healthier diet and getting more sleep.
As a follow-up to this program, an Alzheimer's Awareness Breakfast was held with the focus on healthy eating to help prevent Alzheimer's or to prolong the onset. A UK specialist, a representative from the Alzheimer's Association, and a dietitian gave short presentations while the Family and Consumer Sciences agent talked about the recipes. All participants reported learning new knowledge about the disease and planned to make changes in their diets, as well as increase physical activity and stimulate the brain. This program was an excellent follow-up to the Keys to Aging program.
