Choosing Healthy Foods

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 14% of children aged 2 to 5 are obese. “ Obesity during childhood can put children at risk for physical conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and liver disease.” It is important that youth know the importance of eating healthy foods and exercise.

Breathitt County SNAP-Ed Assistant Senior, in partnership with the Breathitt County School System, taught the LEAP (Literacy, Eating, and Activity for Primary) curriculum. During one visit with a Kindergarten class, the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, was read to 20 students. As part of the lesson, students tried fresh fruit, learned the importance of eating healthy nutritious foods, and participated in several exercises. 100% of students indicated that they would start asking for healthy foods and would start exercising at home.
