Master Cattleman Series
Author: Dee Heimgartner
Planning Unit: Crittenden County CES
Major Program: Beef
Plan of Work: Increasing Knowledge in Agriculture, Home and Community Environment
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
According to the 2012 agriculture census, Crittenden County has over 13,000 head of cattle. Seven of those Crittenden County beef producers participated in a Master Cattleman Series hosted by the Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension agents in Crittenden, Caldwell, and Trigg Counties. A total of 26 cattle farmers from the three counties participated in the 10 week series. Each class featured a topic related to cattle production and was taught by UK Extension Specialists.
As a result of this program, two Crittenden producers have already made changes to their operations. One producer utilized nutrition information gained at the Master Cattleman classes and worked the county agent to change their mineral and feed rations. This change was beneficial in that the cows were able to survive cold weather in better body condition. A second producer has made changes to their forage program by incorporating forages that will lengthen their grazing days and hopefully save money on hay costs.
