Planning Unit: Metcalfe County CES

Major Program: Empowering Community Leaders (general)

Plan of Work: Leadership and Communications

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Metcalfe County Quilters Group was officially organized in 2014 by the (now outgoing) Treasurer of the Metcalfe County Homemakers Association, in order to share the heritage craft and art of quilting within our community and to allow our experienced quilters and fiber artists, to foster quilting and sewing skills in interested novice or inexperienced community members. At least 4 adult members and 1 youth who had no experience with quilting when they started participating, have all now made several quilts of their own and are entering their work into the Metcalfe County Floral Hall and the County Extension Homemakers Cultural Arts Contests.

This group started with 11 members, now has 26 members.  This group conducts 12 monthly meetings on the same day and time each month at the Extension office. They also organize group special outings, many members have participated in: paid outside classes to further increase their quilting skills, the Jabez Quilt Retreat, a 6 day quilting retreat in Tennessee, Paducah Quilt week, and visited the quilt exhibit at the Kentucky Museum on the WKU campus.

This group conducts several day long "sit and sew" events at the Extension office annually where members work on group quilt projects for charity purposes, two quilts were made and donated to local charity fundraising events and approximately $ 1, 700.00 was raised for those Charities, from the sale of those quilts. Group members donated at least 250 volunteer hours towards these charitable projects. The Chairwoman of this group has donated at least 60 hours annually in coordinating the meetings and activities of this group
