Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Julian Farm has been in the same family since 1813 and now has a board of directors to ensure the property remains a farm after the remaining heirs. I have been working with the current owner, Jane, and members of the board to help draft a new lease agreement with the current producer as the farm transitions to a working educational & demonstration farm. The desire is to continue the good working relationship with the long time lease while beef cattle are temporarily removed to restore stream, soils, pastures and improve water sources while still being profitable/desirable for the leaser which is essential to help maintain the farm.

The entire farm is enrolled in the PACE Program, the structures are registered with the KY Heritage Council and a 20 acre remnant savanna is under the Ky Nature Preserves. A section has been utilized for many years as a teaching garden for Frankfort Independent Schools. The remainder has been farmed traditionally for beef cattle and grain crops.

We are currently working with NRCS and exploring various other cost share and grants for stream remediation and pasture restoration as well as developing alternate sources for on0farm water. KSU recently purchased the farm on the southern border which opens up many possibilities for collaborative educational and demonstration opportunities.
