Success Story2023 Butler County Leadership Development Program

2023 Butler County Leadership Development Program

Author: Gregory Drake

Planning Unit: Butler County CES

Major Program: Community Leadership Development

Plan of Work: Development of Volunteer Leaders

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

A community cannot thrive without good leadership.  The Butler County Extension Service offered a leadership development workshop for leaders and potential leaders who wanted to increase their knowledge of parliamentary procedure and running effective meetings.  Leadership development programming continues to be an area extension leadership identifies as an important need for our community.   A presentation about Robert’s Rules of Order was developed using the reference book and an extension publication.   A separate segment was developed on running effective meetings using a reference book that is commercially available.   I presented both topics.  The program was marketed to the community at large, extension leadership, city and county government, and our schools.  16 people attended the event.  It was held at the extension office.  We had the county judge, school superintendent, Homemaker county president and several others in community leadership positions.   A pre-test and post-test were used to determine knowledge gained.  An electronic qualtrics evaluation was used to gather participants reactions to the program.  Pre-test scores averaged 68%.  Post-test scores averaged 91%.  These numbers indicate a lot of knowledge gained, but also reflect that the group had quite a bit of knowledge of the material being covered.  The qualtrics evaluation revealed that 100% of participants increased their knowledge of the topics presented.  92% believed they would use the knowledge gained this year.   100% believed the presenter’s information was up to date and relevant.  The participants asked for additional training on networking and taking meeting minutes.  We will build upon these results, and provide additional leadership training next program year.
