Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

It was discovered at a community health fair that there were children in Simpson County that did not have a bed to sleep in.  Through collaboration of the Simpson County Extension Office, the Franklin-Simpson Leadership Alumni, Simpson County Schools Youth Service Center and the local high school shop class Build A Bed Project was founded in 2017.   Because of Covid 19 and an FCS Vacancy, this project was at a standstill until January 2023.  In January, the Simpson County FCS Extension Agent provided educational materials in Spanish, including Bed Bug publications, laundering instructions, and general cleaning education along with beds, pillows, bedding, books and a stuffed animal for each child to a Hispanic family needing beds for three of their children.  It was estimated that approximately $1,100.00 was donated to this family and that 20 manhours were used in building of the beds.  The smiles and excitement on each of the children’s faces showed the appreciation of receiving their own bed.  Upon delivering the beds, it was noted that additional furnishings and resources were needed.  Members of the community have donated additional items improving lives one family at a time.  In addition, two additional beds, along with bedding, books, and a stuffed animal for each child along with cleaning and care materials including Bed bug prevention have been delivered to another family, totalling 5 beds and materials being delivered to families in need.
