Plan of Work: Encouraging youth to become skillful, productive, contributing members of our community.
Outcome: Initial Outcome
For the 2022-2023 School year, Livingston County 4-H was able to once again host classroom cubs for the 4th-5th grade students at North and South Livingston Elementary Schools. Most of the students were completely new to the world of 4-H and unfamiliar with how meetings were conducted. While teaching the importance of Youth Civic Engagement, Livingston County 4-H allowed the students to create a “Creed”—a set of rules agreed on by everyone, suggest and vote on Club names, and nominate/vote their classmates into elected officer positions. To be elected as a classroom club officer, students had to give a speech explaining why they would be the best person for that job. Students were nervous, but universally their classmates were supportive of them and even offered up positive attributes that qualified them for the position. Students elected were thrilled to perform their officer duties and take leadership roles in their classrooms. The change in student behavior from the meeting where they were nominated, to when they were elected and had to perform their duties was notable. Livingston County 4-H looks forward to continuing to foster the positive student growth seen in the classroom club meetings this school year.
