Whitley County is a hidden gem of natural beauty, nestled at the foothills of the majestic Appalachian Mountains. Its diverse landscape boasts a plethora of plant and animal species, and stunning topography featuring sandstone cliffs, caves, and a world-renowned waterfall. However, even with its breathtaking attractions, many members of the community were unaware of the treasures that lie within their own backyard.

Determined to showcase the beauty of their county, the Horticulture and Community Arts agents of Whitley County launched a new hiking program at the beginning of 2022. This program aimed to promote healthy activity, awareness of the local environment, plant identification, and artistic observation by organizing a series of hikes. These hikes ranged from easy to moderate and spanned from three to ten miles, attracting a diverse group of participants ranging from four-year-old to 80-year-old beginners as well as seasoned hikers.

Over the course of nine hikes, covering 35 miles, the participants explored the local areas including Bark Camp Creek, Dog Slaughter Falls, Red River Gorge, and the Sand Caves and White Rocks at Cumberland Gap. Not only did the participants gain knowledge about local wildlife and plant species, but they also learned about trail safety and the importance of proper attire and preparation. The agents provided tips on stretching and carrying essential items such as water, food, and a first aid kit, ensuring the safety of all hikers.

The program also fostered a sense of community among the participants as they hiked, taking breaks for observation, photography, and plant identification. Many of the beginning hikers reported newfound knowledge of proper hiking attire and trail etiquette, with one young hiker stating, "I now know I shouldn't wear crocs while hiking."

The program's success was exemplified by the 80-year-old hiker who completed the challenging trek up to the Sand Caves and White Rock at Cumberland Gap. Her determination and perseverance serve as a testament to the transformative power of this program, as it pushed her beyond her limits and helped her achieve a remarkable feat.

Through this program, the agents of Whitley County succeeded in showcasing the natural beauty of their region and instilling a love of hiking and nature in the hearts of their community members.
