Christian County 4-H Sewing Program

Author: Katie Mills

Planning Unit: Christian County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Science

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

4-H programs would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of volunteers from the community. Christian County is able to offer a 4-H Sewing Project because of a wonderful volunteer that is also a Master Clothing Volunteer. The volunteer has set a plan to have youth learn the basics of sewing, how to use a sewing machine, and create projects that can be entered into the Western Kentucky State Fair. The first meeting was a success with twelve youth in attendance willing to learn and a teen there to assist. There is also currently a waiting list for the program.

Their first project that they will be creating is a travel case for their bathroom supplies. This is a simple lesson for them to begin with and learn from. This will teach the youth about sewing straight lines and measuring. The materials that will be used are a hand towel, washcloth, thread, and yard stick.
