Major Program: Economic Development

Plan of Work: Educating & Empowering Individuals and Families to Make Responsible Choices and Develop Life Skills

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

I have partnered with the director of multicultural services at Eastern Area Community Ministries to collaborate on programing for the Grupo de Mujeres. This program is welcomes all participants who want to learn about financial education, life-skill development, and female empowerment for themselves and their families. The program started in January 2022 with a focus on teaching participants about personal financial education, life-skill development, and female empowerment for themselves and their families. We met as a group once a month for 3 hours during the afternoon. The program was tailored to the participants needs, therefore childcare, snacks, and language services were provided. There were a total of 15 women who participated in the program from January to December 2022. The lessons covered saving accounts, checking accounts, financial planning, budgeting, savings for short term and long term, writing checks, using ATM's and mobile banking. In January 2022, many participants did not know the difference between checking and savings accounts, how to budget, or how to financially plan for the future. Financial improvement was noticed when many of the participants stated that they were developing a sense of community and became more comfortable when it came to discussing and handling financial matters. On December 6, 2022, we hosted our end of the year Holiday Celebration where participants were interviewed by KSU communications personnel. During this interview participants shared that they enjoyed the program because it allowed the to feel as though they belonged and were among family. They shared that they looked forward to meeting every month because it helped them grow within themselves and gather knowledge about matters they may not have known about. One individual stated that although she works at a financial institution, she was making her budgets all wrong and thanks to the knowledge she gained from the program, she was able to apply it to her personal and professional life. Others mentioned that they were grateful for the community they were able to build and the lessons that taught them how to plan for their children's futures and retirement. Overall, all participants stated that they have acquired some type of financial skill from the program and feel more confident in their financial activities.
