Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Enhance the Strong Agicultural and Natural Resource Base

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Lawrence County Agriculture and Natural Resource (ANR) Extension Agent and the Lawrence County Master Gardeners have been offering a hands on workshop for the community during the holidays. Individuals come in and make wreaths using live greenery harvested from a local KY Proud tree farm. Individuals learn to construct wreaths for the personal enjoyment and also as a way to use live greenery they have at home and possibly a way to make some extra money through the holidays. Orignally the program started with 2, 1 hour classes but the demand for more opportunities to make wreaths had grown significantly that we increased it to a full week plus took it on the road. The Lawrence County Public Library reached out the the Lawrence County ANR Agent to offer the program through the library but to take it out in under served communities. The last week of November wreath making took place in Blaine and Fallsburg. A total of 46 participants constructed wreaths for the holidays. Most of these individuals would not have normally traveled into the Extension Office to make wreaths due to the increase in gas prices and the time it takes to get to town. This was a great opportunity to get participation for individuals who would not have normally taken part in the program. The downtown location of the library also hosted a wreath making program with the Extension Office. 28 individuals participated, since the library covered the fee for the class, this also allowed individuals who could not have afforded to take part in the class the chance to make a wreath.  The ANR Extension Agent and Master Gardeners spend weeks preparing for this class making bows, purchasing greenery, and setting up. In 2022, Individuals and groups came from 2 different states, 4 KY counties, totally over 175 participants. 180+ wreaths were hand crafted. This is a 60% increase from 2021. This is also a great marketing tool for the ANR program in Lawrence County. Over half of the participants during the 2022 program stated that they were unaware that the Extension Office offered these kinds of programs and looked forward to future events. Several individuals signed up for our monthly newsletter and even more said they would be coming back and would also tell their family and friends about what Extension offers.
