Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Agriculture Production

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Simpson County Cattlemen’s Association Executive Committee met with the Simpson County Extension Agent for Agriculture who also serves as an advisor for the Cattlemen’s Association.  They expressed interest in becoming more proficient in cattle handling, care and administering vaccinations.

Based on clientele needs, the agent worked with University of Kentucky Beef Specialist, Kevin Laurent, to offer Beef Quality and Care Assurance (BQCA) Chute Side training for the first time in Simpson County.  By participating in BQCA training, producers will become more confident in cattle handling, animal welfare and utilization of injectable animal health products.  In turn, they will produce a more consistent end product and maximize consumer confidence.   The Extension Agent for Agriculture worked with the Simpson County Cattlemen’s Association President to set up a cattle handling facility and secure cattle to be worked at the meeting at the fairgrounds in the community park.

Twenty four producers attended the hands-on training and 100% passed the BQCA Chute Side Training Post Test.  This allows these producers to be certified for 3 years in BQCA which is a prerequisite for the large animal investment area in the County Agriculture Investment Program (CAIP).  According to a show of hands survey, 100% increased their knowledge and felt more confident in properly handling cattle and administering shots.  One producer that attended said, “This is definitely one of my favorite meetings that I have ever attended.  Thanks so much for your hard work to put this on!”  Another producer reported that they were able to learn more effectively in the hands-on format!
