“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.”
Introducing youth to Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) in the classroom, as well as opportunities for SET discoveries in everyday life is becoming more important in the 21st century. Owsley County 4-H works to provide youth with opportunities to discover and explore SET through hands on learning. Throughout the course of the school year Owsley County 4-H has met with forty-eight participants in the 4th Grade 4-H SET Club monthly to explore SET. Students explored electricity, circuits, and electronics through building circuits of various functionalities such as shining a light, spinning a motor, or producing sounds. Students have built snap circuit rovers to race, created non-Newtonian fluid, and created science fair experiments.
Through the 4th Grade 4-H SET club, youth have engaged in hands on learning and discovery while having fun. All students reported that they found SET to be fun and they were interested in learning more about SET projects. Students also discussed and learned about careers in SET, 82% of students reported they are interested in a Career in a SET field, with 75% of students reporting they were interested in pursuing a SET major in college.
