Small Farm Development is emphasized with a Workshop for Sheep & Goat Production. A recent interest in growing sheep and increasing the number of goats in Pike County has resulted in a planned workshop, sponsored by Pike County Extension and the Pike County Conservation District. Workshop consisted of a brief training in many aspect of sheep & goat production. Training started with a brief history of sheep & goat production in the US, Kentucky, & eastern Kentucky, with setting goals to determine if the projects are a success. Some of the areas covered were Genetics & Selection, Breeds, Health, Bio-Security, Vaccinations, Parasite Control, Nutrition, Protein & Energy, Mineral Requirements, Forages, Basic Rations, and Predator Control Covered. Also covered were some Beginning and Young Farmers grants that are available to assist the individual in building and succeeding with their farms. Training was attended by 10 individuals. All Beginning Farmers and only 1 having more than a years Experience raising sheep & goats. All indicated that the training would help them tremendously in growing their operation.
