Grayson is known as “the heart of the parks” because of its proximity to three local state parks.     A local leader heard about other counties offering hiking clubs while attending the Kentucky Volunteer Forum several years ago.   After she approached the ANR Agent in 2020 about starting a hiking program in Carter County, the Hike & Learn series was created.   Due to the pandemic, programming did not start until 2021.   The ANR & 4-H Agents worked together with park staff to host three Hike & Learns for youth and adults in 2021.    After the FCS Agent was hired, she joined in with programming efforts by offering physical fitness tips, healthy trail snack ideas, and more.    The series was expanded in 2022, with one hike offered each month from March to October.    Along with the trails, hikers also participated in a flashlight cave tour and tomahawk throwing.

In addition to providing natural resources education and a physical fitness opportunity the hikes also brought in a first-time out-of-state visitor to Carter Caves State Resort Park and other out-of-county guests to the local parks.

2022 surveys showed the following results:

  1. 100% gained knowledge about local plants.
  2. 83% visited a new park or trail for the first time.
  3. 67% learned more about invasive species and other threats to woodlands.
  4. 50% have become more physically active.
  5. 33% have learned or plan to learn more about their own woodlands.
