July 2022 brought torrential rain to counties in Eastern Kentucky resulting in flooding. The devastation left people without homes and their personal items needed to maneuver daily living. Items that most people take for granted. The Gallatin County Fun Time Quilters/Homemakers, the Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) Agent, Ronda Rex and Lora Stewart, the 4-H Agent put their heads together to try to lend a helping hand. They knew that the people in the counties hit hard needed ample time to just catch their breath and try to establish living quarters before they could receive any kind of daily living items. The Gallatin County Fun Time Quilters/Homemakers put a call out to the community and received donations from the Gallatin County Homemakers, the community, friends, and family to make 85 beautiful quilts and 121 pillowcases. They spend about three months sewing the quilts and pillowcases.
During this time, Ronda and Lora began working with two other groups, the Gallatin County Senior Center and 4-H youth to make 20 fleece blankets. Ronda contacted Nanette Banks, Letcher County Family & Consumer Sciences Agent to find out if the plan for quilts and blankets was a good match for her community. Nanette graciously accepted on behalf of her community and already knew what families were in most need of such items.
The quilts, pillowcases and fleece blankets were delivered by Homemakers, Marie Allison and Judy Whetzel and FCS Agent Ronda Rex to the Letcher County FCS Agent, Nanette Banks. Nanette delivered them to people in her community who lost their homes and possessions in the flood.
Each of the 85 quilts is valued at $100.00 and each of the 121 pillowcases is valued at $5.00 each. Each of the fleece blankets is valued at $20.00.
