Fencing School

After seeing the need for modernized and improved fencing practices, I collaborated with Dr. Chris Teutsch and members from Ag Council to host the 2022 Kentucky Fencing School. This program was the first one done in Marion County since pre-Covid (2018).

I worked with a local young farmer in Marion County to be the host farm for this event. The first part of the day was held at the Marion County Extension Office. Participants were greeted with refreshments and their own notebook full of educational materials needed to help them start fencing and/or repair their existing fences. In the notebooks, the participants had access to multiple UKY publications, diagrams to help them visualize what their options were when fencing, electric fence information and more.

My goal with the Fencing School was to educate Marion and surrounding counties about proper fencing techniques and their advantages. This program taught participants cost effective and practical ways to fence. I also wanted to create a learning environment that made participants comfortable to ask questions.

The second part of the day was spent on the farm. Participants had hands on learning experience building a fence at the host farm site. They learned how to implement the things taught in the morning session. I had several participants attend and many were from other counties in the state. Some had driven 2+ hours to attend this event.

This program made an impact on 1 African American male, 6 White females and 40 white males from Marion, Nelson, Washington, Taylor, Casey, Green, Boyle, Kenton, Oldham, Clark, Nicholas, Boone, Caldwell, Pulaski, and Breckinridge Counties. Two participants were from Columbus, Indiana.
