Outcome: Initial Outcome
In Fall of 2021, many members of the Calloway County 4-H Council expressed an interest in 4-H providing babysitting curriculum to the youth of our county during a program brainstorming activity. The Council thought it would be especially relevant during summer when older youth are out of school and could help provide child care for younger youth, especially siblings. So, in July of 2022 Calloway 4-H offered a two day Babysitting Day Camp where youth ages 10-16 attended to complete 4-H Babysitting certification, taught by our summer intern. On the first day, 16 youth took the pre-test and then learned about the basic care of infants and children, child development, and emotional development and child guidance. On day two, youth learned about caring for a sick or injured child, safety issues, CPR and first-aid from local EMT's, the business of babysitting, and took the post-test. According to the post-test, 93% of participants were confident in what information they should gather from parents before being left to supervise a child's care and many youth stated this was the first time they had learned CPR and had a chance to practice. After learning about the Babysitting Day Camp, County FRYSC leaders were interested in 4-H offering a babysitting program within the schools opening opportunities for 4-H to make a larger impact in the county, overall.
