Kentucky remains the largest cow and calf producing state east of the Mississippi River. Producers in Caldwell, Crittenden, and Trigg County rely heavily on income generated from cattle production. The past success of the Master Cattlemen Program has helped spread the word of the benefits of participation in the minds of new and seasoned producers alike.
Agents in the above mentioned counties used waiting lists to offer the Master Cattlemen Program. 29 producers from 4 counties participated in 10, 4-hour classroom sessions that focused on the following: Management Skills, Forages, Nutrition, Facilities and Animal Behavior, Environmental Stewardship and Industry Issues, Genetics, Reproduction, Herd Health, End Product and Marketing and Profitability.
Surveys conducted at the conclusion of the program showed the following: 100% rated the program as excellent, 92% intended to implement a new production practice within the next year, and 90% felt more comfortable making tough decisions related to their operation as a result of the program.
