Farm Equipment on Roadways: Preparation and Accident Prevention Video Project

Author: Curtis Dame

Planning Unit: Hopkins County CES

Major Program: Farm Management

Plan of Work: Expanding Opportunities for Technology, Sustainability, and Environmental Stewardship

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Farm equipment continues to grow in size and depending on the time of year the frequency on local roadways will increase as well. With that said safety should always be a contributing factor in how producers and motorists plan for encounters on local roadways. Recently cooperative efforts were made between Agriculture and Natural Resource Agents in Hopkins and Muhlenberg Counties to address this growing concern of farm equipment safety on Kentucky roadways. In order to address key areas of concern local groups were active in filming and assisting with this project and included the Kentucky State Police, Hopkins County Sheriff's Department and Hopkins County School System.

Topics and encounters vary based on the type of equipment, travel speed and time of day. Each of these topics were addressed in the project which was filmed at a local farm in Hopkins County. Project coordinators focused on interactions between farm equipment and school buses, motorists and approaches related to passing farm equipment and overall interactions with motorists. The project which will air in mid-may, is a timely effort to address a population that continues to be removed from the day-to-day activities of farm life and have a lack of information regarding equipment dimensions, speed and overall handling of such equipment.

To conclude overall services offered by cooperating agencies were highlighted as well and included route planning and flagging opportunities provided by the local sheriff's department. Weight limits and legal aspects were addressed as well by the Kentucky State Police. Agents hope that this program will serve to prevent accidents and help to ensure safe passage for producers and motorists on local roadways during farm equipment transportation.
