LaRue County is in a unique situation for growth by its proximity to a new factory that will need a large workforce to support it. We expect many people to move here and possibly new businesses will look to relocate or build new here. The LaRue County Extension Office wanted to help the county prepare for what’s coming by having the Center for Economic Development in Kentucky (CEDIK) do a First Impressions program.

First Impressions is a structured assessment program that enables communities to learn about the first impression they convey to outsiders. It offers a fresh perspective on the appearance, services and infrastructure of each community. Volunteer teams undertake unannounced, one-day visits, record their observations, and give constructive feedback to the community. Their photos and responses are then compiled and presented back to the community by a CEDIK representative. In addition, the program offers suggestions and resources to address the areas identified for potential improvement. The knowledge gained through this program is intended to serve as a basis for community action.

Visits to LaRue County were conducted by ten team members throughout summer and fall of 2022. Results were compiled and presented to the Agriculture and Natural Resources agent in October 2022 so recommendations could be shared with local groups in the community. There was then a community presentation where these findings were shared. 

The report revealed many strengths within the county, and community leaders were pleased to learn that first-time visitors were able to list so many positive aspects of their time in LaRue County. However, they also offered suggestions and resources to address areas of possible improvement. The three main suggestions included: 1) Audit existing websites and update information. 2) Encourage businesses to diversify open hours. 3) Establish a clear arts and culture identity in addition to your Abraham Lincoln history. 

After the initial presentation, we had multiple groups request paper copies of the report so that they could see if there was anything that they may be able to help address within the report. Our Chamber of Commerce’s annual Leadership LaRue Class has taken the task of addressing some of the main suggestions as part of their community group project.
