Author: Lawrence Caudle

Planning Unit: KSU Administration

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

AgDiscovery is a 2 week residential camp that Kentucky State University's 4-H Youth Development Program  offers each year for the past 16 years. Through funding assistance though USDA/APHIS, KYSU 4-H offers this program to expose high schoolers from around the nation to the Veterinary Science field. This year, the students got to visit the KYSU Aquaculture Complex, Darley America's Jonabell and Gainsborough Farms, Morehead State Derrickson Agricultural Complex, Frankfort Brucellosis Lab, the DeBusk Veterinary Training Center at Lincoln Memorial University, and many other places. The students got to experience a wide range of experiences such as preg checking a cow with a probe, feel the teeth of a horse before dental work was performed on it, dissecting a fish, dissecting pigs, taking a behind the scenes tour of the Louisville Zoo, and many more activities. A survey was conducting to gauge the teen participants experience. 44% of the participants agreed that the program was well organized, well-advertised, and the application process was easy. 53% of participants strongly agreed that the presenters responded well to the questions asked during the activities. 59% of the participants noted that the projects helped them understand veterinary medicine and animal science activities offered practical experience relating to animal science. The students had a very positive experience, and the KYSU staff is looking forward to the next AgDiscovery program.
