4-H AG Day Returns

Planning Unit: Lincoln County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Agriculture Sustainability and Marketing 2020-24

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Although agriculture is big business in Lincoln County, only 35% of 4-H members live on a farm. This number is even lower for non-members. Even though nearly one-third of the economy is agriculture-based, many youth do not realize the importance of agriculture in our everyday lives. The Annual 4-H Adventures in Agriculture Field Day helps provide agriculture education to more than 300 third graders in the county with over $2,500 in funding from various agriculture-related community businesses and organizations. In 2022, we were excited to transition this great field day back to an in-person event with 100% of our county schools participating, along with our 4-H Homeschool Group. The 4-H Agent was responsible for securing sponsorships, planning the event, recruiting volunteers and instructors, contacting teachers, involving county staff, and overall implementation of the event. Adventures in Agriculture was held on September 30, 2022 at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds and utilized the help of more than 40 volunteers as instructors, group leaders, cooks, meal servers, and teen leaders. Because of community sponsorship support, 4-H was able to provide t-shirts and lunch to all participants. At the field day, students were able to experience agriculture first-hand by visiting stations. This year’s stations included rabbits, goats, sheep, poultry, alpacas, beef cattle, country ham, butter-making, and dairy. All stations instructed students on how agriculture is a part of their everyday life and its importance in the community. From teacher evaluations, 100% said their students learned something new about agriculture. The event was also a successful tool in promoting both 4-H and agriculture in the county.
