Seed ID Program

Author: Mary Dossett

Planning Unit: McCracken County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: McCracken County Horticulture Education Outreach

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

On October 12th, 2022, Horticulture Agent, Mary Hank, taught a class for kindergarten and first graders at Lone Oak Elementary School. Mary Hank started out the program by asking the children if they knew what horticulture meant. Several guessed teaching and Mary Hank informed them it meant she works with plants and gardening. Mary Hank showed the students different types of seeds and how they are different shapes and colors. Each sample container of seeds had a picture on the top so the students could identify them. Next, Mary Hank gave them the option to color several gardening pages or a seed activity. The students glued sunflower seeds to a picture of a sunflower. Mary Hank taught them more about sunflowers and how to identify the seeds. Several students told Mary Hank they were going to tell their parents they wanted to start a garden at home.
