Overnight Environmental Camp is back on the books

Author: Shannon Farrell

Planning Unit: Harrison County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Protecting the Environment

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Many requests for overnight 4-H environmental camp were made by 4-Hers and teachers in the months following Covid-19 restrictions. Starting the 2022-23 program year, the Harrison County 4-H Public Relations Officers accompanied 4-H Agent to the school board meeting for a presentation on 4-H Environmental Camp and request for approval to offer the overnight option once again to classes. Following the round of applause and granted approval, the Superintendent concluded our item with “have a great time!”

Overnight 4-H environmental camp was attended by 157 4th and 5th graders, plus 24 adult volunteers, and 11 teen counselors. 11 campers were a new group (Leesburg Homeschool Group) that had reached out about joining our camping program. At the camp, participants learned and enjoyed low ropes, poo did it, stream study, fishing, survivor bracelets, raptors, reptile zoo, Daniel Boone Reenactment, and camp promotion.

Among the numerous complements that were received in regards to the camp – some included:

“What an amazing experience to spend time with these kids outside of class and get to know them on a personal level.” - teacher

“Thank you for teaching us how to make these survivor bracelets. I loved it and can’t wait to teach my siblings at home.” - camper
