Following the 2022 KY Volunteer Forum, one of the Harrison County 4-H volunteers who attended an upcycle tea cup class was inspired to repeat the transformed bird feeder to 4-Hers in Harrison County. She brought the concept to the county’s 4-H agent as an idea for a summer project camp. In developing plans for the day, Harrison County Program Assistant and daughter of the volunteer brainstormed with the agent and volunteer to develop a layered project camp day. The event was called the Mad Hatter Tea Party and was held one week before the county fair. The class consisted of 13 4-Hers and 5 staff/volunteers. The day started with baking 3 different recipes from the fair book that was led by the county’s horticulture agent. Next was a lesson on charcuterie boards led by the county’s FCS agent. Then the participants all picked out their cup and saucer to try different flavor teas, that were accompanied by the finished baked goods and charcuterie boards that each participant created. Following the lunch tea party, the county’s 4-H agent led a lesson and activity on table settings. Concluding the day each participant cleaned their teacup and saucer and proceeded to make upcycled bird houses following instructions from the Harrison County volunteer who brought the idea back from KVF. As a result, participants in this project camp entered the following into the Harrison County fair: 2 baked entries, 3 table settings, and 8 upcycled teacup projects.
