Rain Barrels

Author: Dee Heimgartner

Planning Unit: Crittenden County CES

Major Program: Water and Soil Quality and Conservation

Plan of Work: Improve Environmental Awareness and Natural Resouce Utilization

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Rain water collection using rain barrels had been a question that ANR Agent Dee Heimgartner has fielded for a few years. To answer this question she partnered with the Four Rivers Basin coordinator to host a workshop with Crittenden County gardeners. The first class filled up with a waiting list including a few from the neighboring county. A second class was added to the schedule and included Livingston County ANR agent. A third class was hosted after a water conservation mandate was put in place by the city of Marion to conserve water during shortage. The third class was hosted in partnership with Crittenden County Public Library and UK CAFE specialist Dr. Brad Lee. Each class participant received a rain barrel and were taught how to properly care for the barrel. The clients installed them at their home and many have commented that it has saved money on their water bills. It was also instrumental in saving plants for the residents who lived in Marion because the water conservation mandate included no watering of flowers using city water. A total of 36 rain barrels were given out. Class participant showcasing how her rain barrel was installed at her house. This location was easy access to a garden area that previously did not have a water spigot near by.
