Eastern Kentucky Flooding

The night of July 28, 2022, darkness fell with continued rain of two days.  Families in Eastern Kentucky awoke to severe flash flooding. Leslie County Cooperative Extension was emergency closed along with numerous other Extension Offices in the East Region.  University of Kentucky Regional and Area Extension directors were in immediate contact with counties assessing damage and joining in efforts to help communities.

Leslie County Extension was set up as a supply drop off/pick-up point for East 4 Region.  Contacts and communications were made with partners ready to deliver goods and supplies needed. A huge truck load and boxed trailers from ministries in Georgetown, Ky., full of food and supplies arrived August 1st.  Another delivery followed just a few days later.  Many efforts began, like meal preparations served over 70 first responders and flood victims in Leslie and Perry County.   Partnerships constantly continued locally and from afar in efforts to help those in need.   Extension staff, homemaker and community volunteers provided countless hours preparing food, delivering supplies, and working with groups providing needs such as food and food bags, water, cleanup supplies and more. The 43 families in Confluence, which was the hardest hit area in Leslie County was provided food, fellowship and more on several occasions. Educational literature on countless topics dealing with natural disaster was provided to our communities through many avenues. Our efforts to help those in need continue.
