Wally Cat's Story Trail

Author: Shannon Smith

Planning Unit: Bracken County CES

Major Program: Family Development General

Plan of Work: Healthy Lifestyles for Bracken County Residents

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Bracken County Cooperative Extension Office Family and Consumer Science Agent partnered with the Bracken County Family Youth Resource Service to host the first Story Trail in Bracken County.  The FCS Agent and FRYSC Coordinator visited businesses in the Brooksville city to see how many would participate.  We had 20 businesses participate.

The starting point was the Post Office where Wally stood with the maps and a cover of the book.  Participants that visited the storybook trail in Brooksville walked the city reading the pages of the story, "We don't eat our Classmates".  The book had 20 pages and each of the businesses had a page in their window.  The families enjoyed a nice walk around the city of Brooksville.  They got their exercise and read a timely store, since school was about to start.  We had 15 families participate.  Each family completed a survey on the QR code that was provided.   The businesses were very excited about seeing the families walk through town.  Families stated is was a fun activity  and the kids were excited to see the next page.  One family stated, "it was fun to spending time with family in a new and different way".  We hope to make this a regular quarterly program.

After the program was over, we gave the daycare the posters and they are going to use them at the center for the kids to read.
