The Shelby County Livestock Skillathon Team has begun meeting once again to prepare for the upcoming state contest. Team members have waited in eager anticipation for this day to come. While some may say this is just an opportunity for youth to learn more about livestock and the agriculture industry it is so much more than that.
Not only is this an opportunity for youth to learn but it also gives them a chance to grow, be competitive, build life-long friendships, and develop essential life skills (whether they know it or not). With four of our more seasoned team members aging out this past year, spots have opened up for younger members to take on leadership roles and they are rising to the occasion. The team has begun a mentorship where older members work with the new or younger members to encourage them and answer questions during practice. It is wonderful to watch youth take on these leadership roles and show support and understanding for their team members. This is what makes the program a success. Not the banners, awards or titles. But the comradery, the dedication to one another, the encouragement that helps our team to grow.
