Leadership Nelson County is a program sponsored by the Bardstown/Nelson County Chamber of Commerce designed to increase the knowledge and awareness of the vital components of the community for the participants. This year there are 18 participants in the adult leadership program and 35 in the youth program. The Nelson County Extension service hosts both groups to explain and demonstrate the necessity and vitality of agriculture to our community. We have been hosting and organizing a tour of essential agricultural operations for over 30 years and are annually ranked one of the best experiences for each class.
We set out to explain the dependence we have on agriculture producers and the interconnectedness that our daily experiences have in common with ag products. We begin the day with a breakfast and explain to the participants how much breakfast depends on farmers, site statistics as to how much money earned from agriculture remains in the community and continue to paint a picture as to why we need to advocate for farming in our communities. We then begin our tour of the county and visit a diverse set of farms for hands-on learning and to demonstrate how diverse and needed our farms are.
