Plan of Work: Encourage Vibrant Communities and support Economic Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In today's difficult economic climate many farmers are under tremendous stress which can lead to a declines in both physical and mental health.  In an effort to support and encourage the local agriculture community, the Whitley County Cooperative Extension Service in conjunction with the Whitley County Farm Bureau, the Whitley County Small Farms group, and the Whitley County Cattlemen's Association hosted a farmer appreciation event on July 9th, 2022.  This was funded via a Kentucky Department of Agriculture grant program designed to improve the mental health of farmers in Kentucky.  The grant application was prepared and submitted by the ANR/HORT assistant.  The goals of the event were to encourage farmers and their families and to enlighten the general public to the importance of agriculture in everyone's lives.  The ANR agent facilitated the meeting.  The 4H agent coordinated youth activities.  The Horticulture agent supervised parking and assisted with registration and seating.  Extension staff members handled registration and served the meal.   A local caterer provided a delicious meal consisting of regionally local foods. Speakers for the event included a local pastor, the Whitley County Judge Executive, and the Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture.  A local bluegrass band provided hearty entertainment during the meal.  The event was open to all Whitley County farmers and their families.  Approximately 225 people attended, were encouraged to appreciate their agricultural heritage, and gained knowledge of the overall impact of agriculture on the economy of Whitley County.
