Leaders in Action
Author: Nellie Buchanan
Planning Unit: Morgan County CES
Major Program: Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association
Plan of Work: Developing leadership skills to engage in local community
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
Leadership in action is the result of leadership training and development. As a result of FCS and KELD leader training volunteers demonstrated their ability by planning, presenting and evaluating a major Extension Homemaker county event. The International committee, successfully developed a program in collaboration with all clubs throughout the county. Focusing on Suriname, they developed an educational program involving leaders from each club in the county. The program focused on cultural experiences including: dress, foods, agriculture and all aspects of the country.
Additionally, a Chinese cultural immersion program involving the extension homemakers, FCS program, UK Confucius Institute, Morgan County Schools Chinese students and art students was part of the educational event. Participants were involved in dumpling making, calligraphy, eating with chopsticks, music, costumes, origami and other activities illustrating the Chinese culture.
Participants gained valuable knowledge of the Chinese and Suriname culture, focusing on the global environment and the appreciation of other peoples and their ways of life.
