Rethink Your Drink
I had the opportunity to work with 6 adults in 2022, and ½ of these adults drank “Energy Drinks” on a regular daily basis. As the NEP of my county I taught those drinks actually was causing more fatigue than energy.
I did the lesson rethink your drink and explained to this group just what exactly was in this can. I worked with a local pharmacist and we figured out what the total milligram of each ingredient. In my lesson I use instant coffee to illustrate the amount of caffeine in each can. It is about 14 and ½ teaspoons of instant coffee, then the same amount of sugar. My class was surprised just exactly what was in these drinks.
One adult told me that she purposely stopped drinking one can a day, and that she felt better when she took just that 1 can out. I also observed this same adult sharing my sugar and caffeine lesson to other people she would see buying “energy drinks” and tell her story of just by cutting 1 out a day she had more energy than when she drank these.
