Plan of Work: 4-H Natural Resources

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Boone County Extension launches first Jr. Master Naturalist program in 4-day summer camp targeted towards ages 12-17.  The age group was chosen due to a need of programming for teenagers within the community.  Fifteen participants learned a variety of environmental topics in various locations throughout the county.

The first two days took place at the Boone County Environmental and Nature Center where they studied birds, insects, wildflowers, mushrooms and trees.  Activities included making coasters with wildflowers, identifying and pinning insects, growing their own mushrooms, and getting to see and touch various bird skins. Day three participants were able to explore Big Bone Lick State Park where they were introduced to fossils local to Northern Kentucky, were able to participate in a fossil hunt and a mock team-archeological dig.  Day four they explored Middle Creek Park and learned about salamanders, macroinvertebrates, fish and their impact on water quality.

All participants gained knowledge through the program and planned to explore other outdoor areas.  Roughly half felt they would make behavioral changes that would benefit their local environment. Participants stated they would recommend the program to a friend and asked for the opportunity to dive even deeper into environmental topics in future programs.

Many of these participants became participants in other Extension programs due to the fun and knowledge learned during Jr. Master Naturalist.
