According to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics among Americans aged 12 years and older, 31.9 million are current illegal drug users. If alcohol and tobacco are included, 165 million or 60.2% or of Americans aged 12 years or older currently abuse drugs. The Magoffin County Nutrition Education Program Assistant Senior works with the Kentucky Mountain Bible Mission Training Center; a local drug prevention center and faith-based organization that helps adult men and women fight their addictions. teaches the Healthy Choices for Everybody to the adult currently living at the mission.  The Healthy Choices for Everybody curriculum incorporates lessons and activities that recognize participants’ experiences, skills, and knowledge; explains why, what, and how the nutrition education concepts presented relate to real-life situations; and includes active learning activities, hands-on practice, and demonstrations to help participants understand and apply content.  The lesson, activities, and information given to the adults in this group help them to start over once their treatment is complete and be able to eat better and manage food security for a healthier lifestyle.
The Kentucky Bible Mission Training Center is not a government funded facility. So, the food and drinks they receive are donated so this doesn’t always allow them to make the healthiest choice in their meal consumption. But, with the help of the Nutrition Education Program Assistant Senior has presented several core lessons with this adult group and is always amazed by the information retained from these clients. They now understand the and us the nutrition fact label on the products they use when cooking meals. One participant said, “I Love Ramen noodles and I never knew the amount of sodium in them until this class.” Several other participates chime in during the review of lesson pasted and it bring great joy to The Nutrition Education Program Assistant Senior at the amount of information this group retain and uses daily.  The goal for the Healthy Choice for Everybody Curriculum is to show 50% or higher positive changes in any food group with this group of the graduates they showed a 56% improvement in fruits and 75% improvement in vegetables consumed.  Also, the changes made withing this adult group with meal planning and food prep has improved 100% since being introduced to the Healthy Choices for Everybody curriculum.
