This is about a group of women that reside in a facility for women with substance abuse problems. Some of the women that reside here, have little or no access to fresh fruits and vegetables or foods that they need for special diets due to some of their health issues. These women have to eat what is provided from donations. The Expanded Food and Nutrition Program Senior Assistant from Jefferson County Extension Services has been teaching ongoing nutrition classes at this facility, using the Healthy Choices Curriculum lessons. After completing their (7) lessons, the women were able to choose healthier whole grains, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, less fried foods and chose low fat milk, less sugary drinks and desserts. The women also participated in preparing healthy recipes, using curriculum recipes and Nutrition Calendar. The women received cooking reinforcements and a completion certificate. They also had a 97% positive change in any food group.
