Eastern Kentucky recently saw unparalleled disaster due to heavy rainfall and flooding. Understandably, many in that area are struggling daily while attempting to maintain some semblance of normalcy. The Knott County 4-H Agent asked for volunteers to assist in providing programs to the youth of that county to give them a brain break and enjoy activities. Bell County’s Agriculture Agent and 4-H Agent volunteered to provide natural resource programming to the youth. The agriculture agent taught lessons about bees, beekeeping and honey. He provided a demonstration with a working hive, had one youth wear the beekeeper suit and go through the stages of maintaining the hive. At the end, each child was given honey sticks to enjoy. One youth that attended stated, “I didn’t know that much went into keeping bees! I would like to do this at home!” The 4-H agent provided a lesson on how to make a pocket-sized tacklebox. He provided all materials for each attendee with the necessary tackle to go fishing at their local pond or stream. After the tacklboxes were assembled, they went outside and practiced their casting with the backyard bass game. Friendly competitiveness ensued, but all of the participants enjoyed honing their skills with a rod and reel. A total of 19 youth attended the natural resource day camp. During these programs, youth learned valuable life skills that they can carry with them throughout life. More valuable than that, they were able to escape reality for a few hours and enjoy the company of their peers.
