Achievement Award Particiaption

Planning Unit: Daviess County CES

Major Program: Leadership 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Building Life Skills in Youth

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Participation in the Kentucky 4-H Achievement Awards process can be very rewarding. In this process, 4-H youth learn the skills and importance of record keeping. Daviess County has had low participation in this process for several years, even after offering incentives of a vest and jacket for junior and senior 4-H’ers who excel in completing the Awards application. In recent years, 4-H Agents and Staff in Daviess County have brainstormed to find other ways to boost 4-H’ers involvement in the Achievement process. After completing a training with State Specialist, Kimberly Adams-Leger, Daviess County 4-H Agents ask State 4-H Secretary, Mattea Wyatt, to present an Achievement Applications Workshop in Daviess County. This Workshop was offered September 20, 2017 and attended by 3 youth, 2 parents and Daviess County 4-H Staff. With the knowledge gained from both training opportunities, 4-H Agents were better able to promote the Achievement Application process to youth, answer questions related to the application, and provide feedback and suggestions to enhance the 4-H’ers applications. As a result of these efforts, 6 Daviess County 4-H youth completed at the state level in the Achievement process in the levels of Clover Level 3 all the way up to Silver and an additional 3 participating at Clover Level 1 and 2. Of these 9 individuals, 5 participated for the first time in the program this year. In Daviess County, this application process is also used to determine the County 4-H Council Scholarship Winner as well as scholarship eligibility for attending teen events including State Teen Conference and Issues Conference. As a result, it is the hope that these individuals will continue to learn these record keeping skills and prepare a solid foundation for their future in college and beyond.
