It was brought up at a Barren County Horticulture Council meeting that pollinators are an important topic. Butterflies were specifically mentioned along with creating butterfly gardens. Two Kentucky Extension Master Gardeners had approached the Barren County Extension Agent for Horticulture Education about a butterfly basics program they were developing and offered to come teach it in Barren County. The program was offered during the day in March and targeted non-working or retired people who might have more time to put into a butterfly garden project. The program focused on common butterflies found in Kentucky, their life cycle and behavior, as well as the plants known to attract them. Thirteen of the participants said that after the Butterfly Basics program they could better distinguish between a moth and a butterfly, that they could better identify the common butterflies of Kentucky, that they saw the importance in understanding the impact the use of pesticides has on butterfly populations, and that butterfly habitats should be protected. One lady made the comment, “This class made me more confident to finish my butterfly garden.” There were members from the Barren River Area Extension Master Gardener Association, the Glasgow Garden Club, as well as many other clients in attendance. One Glasgow Garden Club member provided seed for everyone to take home and plant in their gardens to help attract butterflies to our community. With their newfound knowledge and access to the seed resource, many of the participants planned to include beautiful butterfly habitats in their garden plans this spring.
