According to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics among Americans aged 12 years and older, 31.9 million are current illegal drug users. If alcohol and tobacco are included, 165 million or 60.2% of Americans aged 12 years or older currently abuse drugs. The Magoffin County Nutrition Education Program Assistant Senior works with the Kentucky Mountain Bible Mission Training Center; a local drug prevention center and faith-based organization that helps adult men and women fight their addictions. It is a struggle trying to get yourself clean and stay that way for those in recovery. They should not have to worry about food security and how to provide meals for their family.  The Nutrition Education Program Assistant Senior works with this group teaching them the Core lesson and skills provided the Nutrition Education Programs Healthy Choices for Everybody Curriculum. The small class sizes at this location makes it easier to have hands on participation.   The lessons and skills provided in Core lesson in the Nutrition Education Programs Healthy Choices for Everybody Curriculum builds a strong foundation the graduates can use in their everyday lives. The Curriculum is designed to help everyone have the confidence in managing their kitchen.  After the seven-core lesson had been taught the class showed great confidence in their skills. From the reading label lesson 100% of the class was able to read and use food nutrition labels to plan health meals and know what is in the food they are eating. Four of the class participants have said they feel more confident using a knife thanks to the class. Exit surveys show 100% of the class graduates showed improvements in one or more areas from the surveys they were given.  The success that comes from this class is not just the growth of the participants, but it is the eagerness for everyone to step in and do their part to complete the lesson activities and objections.  The Magoffin County Nutrition Education Program Assistant Senior sees success and accomplishment in all the faces of the participants, however when they talk about things, they have learned the Magoffin County Nutrition Education Program Assistant Senior knows everyone has received useful information and skills from this experience and can go back out into the world with confidence.
