Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Lawrence County Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education Program (SNAP-Ed) Senior Assistant partnered with the Lawrence County High School Physical Education and Health teacher to address nutrition and health during March Nutrition Month. The teacher selected subject matter from the Teen Cuisine curriculum to be taught with 78 students in 9th – 12th grades. Selected topics included: Added Sugars, Find the Fats, Power up with Breakfast, and Snack attack. Proper hand washing and food safety concepts were emphasized.  All students participated in a hands-on activity in which students passed an item to each other with Glo germ powder and then viewed their hands under a black light to see how easy germs can be transferred.   After students washed their hands, they returned to the black light to see how well they washed the germs (powder) off.  Approximately 75% of students had to re-wash their hands.  As a result of the lessons, 60% of the youth improved on handling food safely, 63% improved on being more physically active, and 73% improved in diet quality practices consistent with Federal Dietary Guideline recommendations.

The Teen Cuisine lessons were successful; and the teacher was pleased with the participation from students.
