Outcome: Initial Outcome

An H2A Tobacco Workers’ Gap Training has been held annually in August in Lyon County with one skip year due to COVID. This is a collaboration with the Western Kentucky Migrant Education Program. They provide the education (in Spanish) required by the GAP program and have an opportunity to connect with under-21 workers that are the primary group that they work with. This year the farmers met in a side room with the University of Kentucky Dark Tobacco Specialist for a small group discussion. Six farms from three counties participated and 69 farm workers were trained in the areas required for GAP Certification:

  1. Prevention of Carbon Monoxide Positing (fire-cured only)
  2. General Farm Safety
  3. Safe Operation of Farm Equipment & Machinery
  4. Green Tobacco Sickness
  5. Heat Stress
  6. Storage, Handling, Application & Disposal of Agrichemicals
  7. Use of Person Protective Equipment
  8. Recognition of Restricted Entry Interval
  9. Required Worker Protection Standard Training
  10. Farm Emergency Plan & Emergency Response

They enjoyed pizza and ice cream and a chance to visit with each other afterward.
