Exploring 4-H Day Camp

Author: Christina A. Martin

Planning Unit: Russell County CES

Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: Skills Development through Youth Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Several youth from ages 9-13 participated in an “Exploring 4-H Day Camp” in the summer of 2022.  Since the pandemic has required a rebuilding of the 4-H and Cooperative Extension Service programs, this day camp allowed younger youth to experience part of the array of activities and disciplines that 4-H had to offer.  The day began with learning about archery and shooting sports.  The youth learned the parts of a bow as well as safety protocols before actually getting on the range to shoot.  Then the youth experienced the world of honey bees with a local, young beekeeper. They followed up this experience by learning more about pollinators with Mrs. Laura Rogers from KSU while making a mason bee house and tasting honey from around the country.

With the advances in science and technology, another component of the day was to learn about drones and their importance in agriculture as well as in consumer sciences.  The youth were able to fly drones with Mr. William Rogers from KSU.

In the afternoon, the youth participated in cooking and made various art projects that can be entered in the county fair.  They made sun prints and did sand painting.  Additionally they learned about symmetry in art as well as the art of Piet Mondrian.  They also learned to stipple as a form art shading and learned to expand a drawing using a grid.

Not only did the youth experience a wide variety options from the 4-H program, they also learned that adults volunteer their time so that they can learn in a caring, safe environment.  Youth also expressed an interest in joining 4-H project clubs in the fall.
