Drone Club takes 4-H program to new heights

Author: Jeremiah Johnson

Planning Unit: Christian County CES

Major Program: Science, Engineering, and Technology

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In 2020, the volunteer groups in Christian County identified a need for additional Aerospace opportunities for youth.  Due to a surplus of robotics programs and rocketry programs, 4-H decided to incorporate into our program offerings.  This gave youth a unique opportunity to learn more in-depth about the scientific method.   The 4-H Drone Club was born.

The club involved 23 youth over the course of a year.  Over 80% of the club members were in the 6-8th grades.  Youth learned basic flight principles, coding, and problem-solving skills. Of club members surveyed, 89% acknowledged learning new career opportunities in the aviation industry and 95% indicated learning new techniques for problem solving.   90% of youth surveyed, showed an increase in their ability to make good decisions.

For the upcoming program year, it is our goal to replicate this club throughout the county in different schools and community centers, with the intention of having a county competition.
