When promoting camp to our local community, the Extension Staff and myself, do our best to promote the opportunity of camp to all youth within our community. For some youth, 4-H camp is the first experience the have with their local 4-H. The purpose of the 4-H camping program is to improve people through intentional life skill development. There have been several comments that I have heard from our campers this year about all the new things they have tried and the skills they have learned.
This year we took 33 youth, including campers and teen leaders to North Central 4-H Camp. In attendance was 20 female youth, 13 male youth, 4 Extension Agents/Intern and 1 adult volunteer. After returning from camp I was told about the experiences that one young man had while attending camp. Since returning, he is wanting his mother to attend camp as a counselor next year and has already starting about the classes he wants to attend at camp next year. Prior to attending camp he was nervous that he wouldn't know anyone else since there was only 1 other child attending that also attended his school. He made several new friends that attend the county school system and said he can't wait to go to camp with them again next year. He has also been trying to recruit some of the players on his baseball team to attend next year and told them about all the activities and friends he made during his week at camp.
As a result from his experiences at camp, he has now decided that he wants to become more involved in a local 4-H livestock club to be able to gain educational hours/ trainings and be able to show at the county fair next year.
