Teen Conference: Horse Major

Author: Fernanda Camargo

Planning Unit: Animal and Food Sciences

Major Program: Equine

Outcome: Initial Outcome

I developed the horse major for the 2022 Teen Conference, where we hosted 25 teens and a few adults. On the first day I taught them the basics of equine nutrition, which included the anatomy and physiology of the horse GI tract, dietary requirements, feed tag reading, how to formulate a balanced diet according to the horse's needs, different ingredients in concentrates, how to choose hay, and day to day management of the thin and fat horse.

On the next day, I organized a field trip to Hallway Feeds, where Jeff Pendleton gave them a lecture on how ingredients are grown, purchased and transported, today's inflation and how it affects the price of horse feed, followed by a tour of the plant, where everyone could see first-hand how horse feed is milled and bagged.

This was a great partnership between UK and Hallway feeds. What the youth found most interesting was that Jeff mentioned most of the points that I had taught them the day before, so it really became a symbiotic experience for them, and the topics built on each other.

These kids are all seniors, and some of them are part of the horse program, but at least 30% of them were not, and picked this major to learn more about horses.
