Planning Unit: Carter County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Livestock and Forage Production and Marketing

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

According to the Ag Census, 68% of Carter County’s agriculture economy is from livestock production and there are over 11,000 head of beef cattle in the county.   Over the past year, the Agriculture and Natural Resource Agent for Carter County reached over 100 beef producers via programs, newsletters, farm visits, social media, and personal communications. In addition to local YouTube videos and five BQCA trainings, the Northeast Area Livestock Association met nine times between May 2021-April 2022.   Speakers included industry professionals, local veterinarians, and UK Ag Extension Specialists.   Through these many programs the agent has provided research-based information and diagnostic services that address livestock health, nutrition, genetics, reproduction, facilities and handling, marketing, risk management, and leadership. A survey was conducted to determine the benefits of Extension to the Carter County beef producers.

Of the 36 beef producers who responded to a survey:

93 % adopted a practice to improve or maintain animal nutrition

72 % practiced efficient reproduction techniques

93 % demonstrated good animal health practices

92 % improved equipment or facilities

88 % increased profits, reduced expenses and/or reduced risk

Of those reporting increased profits:

16% increased by less than $500/year.

31.5% increased by $501-1000/year.

              31.5% increased by $1001-5000/year

21% increased by more than $5000/year.
