4-H Camp volunteers have a tremendous influence on the success of camp. Daviess County was fortunate to take thirteen excellent adult volunteers to 4-H camp this year. All volunteers received required 4-H Camp volunteer training. Some, but certainly not all, of the best volunteers are the ones who grow through their own 4-H camp participation as youth. Five of this year’s volunteers were young adults (aged 18-20) who quite successfully navigated the differences between being a camper, then a teen volunteer, and finally an adult volunteer. These five young adults who combined had over 40 years of camp experience between them made the transition extremely well. They directly mentor the campers for whom they are responsible and who look up to them immensely. Their vast camping experience allowed them to also mentor older adult volunteers who had not attended 4-H Camp before, but who may have had more supervisory experience. The pandemic restrictions of the past two years made this year’s camp more challenging in terms of negative camper behavior. These young people handled all of the challenges with a positive attitude and willingness to learn.
